What happened

Following a multi-year NHTSA investigation, Tesla recalled more than 2 million US vehicles to add additional driver-monitoring safeguards to Autosteer/Autopilot via an over-the-air software update; NHTSA later reopened a query in 2024 questioning whether the fix was effective.
